A dying tree almost always shows at least one of five reliable signs: a bare or thinning canopy during the growing season, bark cracking or falling away in sheets, mushrooms growing at the base of the trunk, dead limbs concentrated in the upper crown, and deep cracks or cavities in the trunk. Any one of these is worth a closer look; two or more together usually mean the tree is in real decline. Around Springfield, Missouri, the most common culprits right now are emerald ash borer — confirmed in Greene County in 2018 — and drought stress on oaks rooted in the region's thin, rocky karst soil.
Here's how to read each sign, how to run a simple scratch test yourself, and how to make the honest call between saving a tree and taking it down.
What the leaves and canopy are telling you
The canopy is the tree's health report, but you have to read it against the calendar. A bare oak in February is just winter. A bare oak in July — while every neighbor tree is in full leaf — is dead or very close to it. That's why mid-summer is actually the best diagnostic season in the Ozarks: full leaf-out gives you a clean comparison across your whole yard.
Between "fully leafed" and "bare," watch for these patterns:
- Thinning from the top down. When the upper third of the crown goes sparse while lower limbs still leaf out, think borers or root trouble. This top-first pattern is the signature of emerald ash borer in ash trees.
- A dead side. If one whole side of the crown fails while the other leafs normally, the roots on that side are often the problem — severed by trenching, drowned by drainage changes, or rotted.
- Early browning or early drop. A tree that turns brown in July or drops leaves in August is running out of resources. On Springfield's shallow soils, that's frequently drought stress announcing itself.
- Undersized, pale leaves and stubby twig growth. A stressed tree pushes smaller leaves each year. Compare this year's twig growth to previous years — healthy shade trees typically add several inches of new twig annually; a declining tree adds almost none.
Bark and trunk: cracks, sloughing, and woodpecker flecking
Bark should be tight. When it cracks vertically, loosens, or sloughs off in sheets to expose smooth wood underneath, the cambium beneath it — the living layer that keeps the tree alive — is dead in that spot. A patch of lost bark is a wound; bark peeling across the whole trunk or a major limb means that section is gone.
Two trunk signs deserve special attention:
- Woodpecker flecking ("blonding"). When woodpeckers chip away the outer bark in pale patches, they're mining for insect larvae underneath. On ash trees around Springfield, blonding partway up the trunk is one of the earliest visible signs of emerald ash borer damage — often showing up a season before the canopy visibly thins. Look also for D-shaped exit holes about an eighth of an inch across, and S-shaped tunnels under any loose bark.
- Cracks and cavities. A deep vertical crack — especially one that runs into a branch union — is a structural failure in progress, not just a cosmetic flaw. Old cavities mean interior decay; the question is how much sound wood remains around them, which is a judgment call for someone who evaluates trees for a living.
Sawdust-like material at the base, carpenter ants trailing up the trunk, and sprouts erupting from the lower trunk while the top declines all point the same direction: the tree is losing the fight.
Mushrooms at the root flare mean advanced decay
Of all five signs, this one is the most decisive. Mushrooms and shelf-like conks fruiting on the trunk, at the root flare, or from the major roots are the visible tip of a fungal network that has already consumed wood inside the tree. Fungi fruit late — by the time you see them, the decay is established, and it's sitting in the worst possible place: the anchoring roots and trunk base that hold the tree up.
Clusters of honey-colored mushrooms at the base of a declining oak are a particular red flag in the Ozarks, where root-rot fungi routinely move in on drought-weakened trees. Combine base fungus with any crown thinning or a lean, and the conversation should shift from "can we save it" to "how soon can we safely remove it." A tree can look green up top and still be hollow where it counts.
One more ground-level check: after storms or saturated spells, look for soil cracking, mounding, or lifting on one side of the trunk. That's the root plate moving — the beginning of a whole-tree failure.
The scratch test, done right
The scratch test is the quickest way to check whether wood is alive, and most people do it wrong by testing a single twig. Here's the right way:
- Pick a pencil-thick twig and scrape a thumbnail-sized strip of bark off with your nail or a pocket knife.
- Green and moist underneath = alive. Brown, tan, or dry and brittle = dead at that spot.
- Repeat on five or six branches spread around the crown — high, low, and on all sides.
- If a twig is dead, work backward along the branch toward the trunk, scratching as you go, until you find live tissue (or don't).
The pattern matters more than any single result. Dead tips with live wood close behind them often just means deadwood that pruning can clean up. Dead wood all the way back to the scaffold limbs — or a green base under a dead top — means systemic trouble: borers, root damage, or decline that pruning won't reverse.
The killers specific to the Springfield area
Every region has its tree problems. Around Springfield, three account for most of the dying trees homeowners are looking at right now.
Emerald ash borer. EAB was confirmed in Greene County in 2018, and the City of Springfield took it seriously enough to inventory and inspect all of its roughly 380 city-managed right-of-way ash trees. Nationally, the beetle has killed ash on a massive scale everywhere it has become established, and the Springfield metro is now deep into its infestation curve. The hard truth for homeowners: an untreated ash typically dies within a few years of infestation, and dead ash turn brittle fast — brittle enough that they become genuinely dangerous to climb, which narrows removal options and raises costs the longer they stand. If you own an ash showing blonding, top-down thinning, or D-shaped exit holes, put a timeline on it now rather than after it's a hazard.
Drought-stressed oaks on karst. Springfield sits on thin, cherty silt loam over limestone — some of Missouri's most sinkhole-dense karst terrain. That shallow, rocky profile holds little moisture, so the big oaks that define older neighborhoods run dry in hot summers, and repeated drought years push stressed oaks into the decline spiral Missouri foresters call oak decline: drought weakens the tree, then opportunistic borers and root fungi finish the job over several seasons. Watch mature oaks for sparse crowns, dead upper limbs, and early browning — decline is gradual, which means early-caught trees can often be helped, and far-gone trees can be identified before they drop limbs on something expensive.
Storm-cracked silver maples and Callery pears. The Springfield metro's storm history does its own culling — the April 29, 2025 windstorm brought a 91-mph gust at the airport and dropped trees across the city, and the January 2007 ice storm remains the regional benchmark. Fast-growing silver maples from mid-century plantings and the Bradford/Callery pears that filled 1990s–2000s subdivisions are the first to split, and a storm-cracked tree that "survived" often carries a hidden failure that finishes the job in the next front. After any major wind or ice event, inspect branch unions and the trunk for fresh cracks — and note that Missouri conservation programs have offered a free native tree in exchange for each Callery pear removed, because the species is invasive as well as fragile.
Save it or remove it? The honest trade-offs
Not every declining tree is a removal. The right call depends on what's wrong, how far it's gone, and what's underneath the tree.
Pruning and care win when: the cause is correctable (drought, deadwood, minor storm damage), less than about a quarter of the crown is affected, and the trunk and roots are sound. Cleaning out deadwood through professional tree trimming, watering deeply during dry stretches, and mulching the root zone give a stressed tree its best shot — and on Springfield's shallow soils, summer watering of mature trees pays off more than most homeowners expect. For oaks, schedule pruning for the dormant season to limit disease exposure.
Removal wins when: the tree has a new lean or the soil is cracking at the base, more than half the crown is dead, decay fungus is fruiting at the root flare, a major trunk crack runs through a branch union, or a dead ash stands within falling distance of a house, driveway, or play area. At that point the tree is a liability on a countdown, and professional tree removal is cheaper than the roof, fence, or vehicle it eventually lands on. Timing matters most with ash: removing one while the wood is still sound is a routine job, while removing a long-dead, brittle one is a high-risk operation that typically costs meaningfully more.
