On April 18, 1880, an F4 tornado carved an 800-yard-wide path across 64 miles of the Ozarks and straight through Marshfield, killing 99 people — roughly one in every ten residents. The Marshfield Cyclone still ranks among the deadliest tornadoes in American history, and Missouri StormAware still uses it as a teaching case. In most towns, a storm that old would be trivia. Because the storm didn't find this town by accident. At about 1,490 feet, Marshfield is the highest county seat in Missouri and the highest town on Route 66 east of the Rockies, set on open, gently rolling upland astride the drainage divide where the James, Niangua, Osage Fork, and Pomme de Terre all rise. That's elevated, exposed plateau ground with very little standing between a wind field and whatever's rooted in it. Wind is only half of Marshfield's climate file. The January 2007 ice storm laid one to two and a half inches of ice on the counties along and north of I-44 and destroyed tens of thousands of trees across the region. Ice loading is selective: it finds brittle silver maple, Callery pear, and any over-extended limb hanging above a roof, a driveway, or a service drop, and it snaps them in the worst possible order. The fix is boring and effective — crown reduction and hazard-limb pruning in fall and early winter, before the glaze arrives, so the weight has less lever arm to work with.
Old trees on thin rock
Marshfield's median home was built in 1979, and the housing around the courthouse square is older still — which means a lot of lots carry oaks and maples that are 50 to 100-plus years old, planted when both the house and the tree were small. Underneath them is the other structural problem: cherty silt loam over limestone bedrock, a shallow, stony rooting zone that leaves mature post oak and white oak drought-stressed in summer and windthrow-prone when the plateau gusts. A big oak that looks permanent can be anchored in surprisingly little soil. That's the calculus behind a lot of tree removal decisions here — around the square, in established streets like Briarwood, and on the timbered acreage lots of River Hills, where standing hardwoods are the whole point of the property and the failing ones need to come out without wrecking the rest.
